Tolkien Door – Stow-on-the-Wold | Spring Hill Farm

Do you recognise this door? It’s hidden in the beautiful market town of Stow-on-the-Wold

Stow is a 30-minute drive (18 miles) from Spring Hill Farm, perched high on the Cotswolds. Stow has been a busy trading hub for centuries, sitting where several historic roads meet – including the ancient Roman Fosse Way.

The so-called Tolkien Door is tucked into the north porch of St Edward’s Church. Flanked by two centuries-old yew trees, it looks as though it has grown straight out of a storybook. Some believe it inspired the “Doors of Durin” from The Lord of the Rings. While there’s no firm evidence to prove the link, we do know that J.R.R. Tolkien lived and taught in nearby Oxford and often visited the Cotswolds. The porch itself dates back about 300 years, and the yew trees were originally planted to beautify the entrance — over time, they have grown into a natural arch around the door.

Beyond the church, Stow-on-the-Wold is a delight to explore. Browse its independent shops, antique stores and galleries, pause for tea and cake in a café, or enjoy a hearty meal in one of its welcoming pubs and restaurants. It’s well worth a visit.

Finding the Tolkien Door on Foot
(You can park in the Market Square — but you can’t drive right up to the church with these directions, so this is on foot from the square.)

Start in the Market Square – In the middle you’ll see a stone cross. If you’re facing The Kings Arms and The Hotel Posting House, turn right around so you’re facing the opposite way. You may spot the church tower peeking above the rooftops in the distance.
Find Church Street – From this position, look to the left-hand corner of the square and you’ll see a “No Entry” sign for cars. This is Church Street.
Walk Up Church Street – Follow this short lane until you reach two stone pillars with a metal arch and light between them — this is the entrance to the church grounds.
Enter the Church Grounds – With the church in front of you, take the path around either side.
Discover the Tolkien Door – You’ll find it on the far side of the church.
